My topic will be about impact of climate change on environment and people`s lives. In my opinion, climate change is the greatest problem of the human being today. It happens right now, and in general it represents one of the biggest environmental, social and economic hazards facing our society.
The average temperature on Earth has been increasing recent times. For example, the global average surface temperature has increased by 0.6° C – 0.20° C over the last century. Generally, 2015 and 2014 were the warmest years and 2010–2014 were the warmest decade, that were put on record. A lot of countries have faced with raise in rainfall, especially in the countries located in the mid to high latitudes.
In some parts of Asia and Africa, the number and strengths of droughts have been risen recent decades. These facts are telling us that the people finally weak from this problem. Our climate is changing, then it leads to more difficult for people to survive. Earth is losing its equilibrium due to the inequality created by human actions.
Some studies, which were made by scientists in IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), have shown, that in the nearby future the global surface temperature will rise by 1.4°C – 5.8° C. This warming shift will be greater in land areas, and also at high latitudes. This also will lead to increasing floods and drought. There will be lower cold spells, but more heat waves. The frequency and intensity of the storms will also to increase.
Also, the global average sea level is predicted to increase by 9.88 cm by the year 2100. Now more than half of the world’s population lives within 60 km of the sea. These people are possibly to be seriously impacted by the ingress of sea water. For example, some of the most defenseless areas are Nile delta in Egypt, the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta in Bangladesh, and a lot of small islands including the Marshall islands and the Maldives.
We all know, that general health of human being relies on safe drinking water, ample food, protected shelter, and acceptable living conditions. Our planet will be actively affected by changes of climate such as droughts and floods. An unstable climate could bring some shifts in the frequency and/or depth of these extremes. This can lead us to fundamental concerns.
For instance, freshwater suppliers could be actively affected, reducing the availability of clean water for drinking and cleaning during drought and also floods. Water can be injured and sewage systems may be flawed. There could be also a risk of spread infectious diseases, such as diarrheal and also indirectly, i mean through an increase in plant pests or animal diseases.
The local contraction in food production would lead to starvation and also malnutrition with serious health consequences, especially for children. Food and water shortages also may lead to conflicts in defenseless and unstable regions. Climate change related impacts on human health could lead to deracination of a large number of people, can create environmental refugees and lead to further health problems.
Climate changes may also affect the circulation of some species, for example mosquitoes, which, consecutively, will boost the spread of some diseases, such as malaria and filariasis, to new areas, which lack of a capable public health infrastructure. The seasonal transportation and circulation of many diseases that are transmitted by mosquitoes, for example dengue, yellow fever, and by ticks, for example lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis, may spread due to climate change.
Definitely, we have some practical solutions to prevent the climate change.
First, we should get involved. By this i mean to take a few minutes to contact political representatives and the media to tell them that we want immediate action on climate change. We should remind them that reducing greenhouse gas emissions will also build healthier communities, spur economic innovation and will create new jobs. And next time we will be at the polls, we should vote for politicians who support effective climate policies.
Second, we should be energy efficient. It means, that we could change light bulbs to compact fluorescents or LEDs. We can unplug computers, TVs and other electronics when not in use. Wash clothes in cold or warm (not hot) water. Also we can look for the Energy Star label when buying new appliances.
Third, we can choose renewable power. People could ask their utility to switch their account to clean, renewable power, such as from wind farms.
Fourth, we can eat wisely. By this i mean, to buy organic and locally grown foods and avoid processed items. Maybe grow some own food.
Fifth, we can trim our waste. This means, that garbage buried in landfills produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. It keeps stuff out of landfills by composting kitchen scraps and garden trimmings, and recycling paper, plastic, metal and glass. We should let store managers and manufacturers know that we want products with minimal or recyclable packaging.
Sixth, we should let polluters pay. This is about carbon taxes, that make polluting activities more expensive and green solutions more affordable, allowing energy-efficient businesses and households to save money. If somebody`s province doesn’t have a carbon tax, he or she should ask their premier to implement one.
Seventh, we can fly less. Air travel leaves behind a huge carbon footprint. Before somebody books their`s next airline ticket, he or she could consider greener options such as buses or trains, or try vacationing closer to home.
Eighth, people should be informed about this topic. They could read some newspapers, watch some channels and browse the web.
Ninth, people could green their commute. By this i mean, that people could walk, cycle or take transit whenever they can. They will save money and get into better shape! If they can’t go car-free, they could try carpooling or car sharing, and use the smallest, most fuel-efficient vehicle possible.
Tenth, people should support and donate. Many organizations are working hard on solutions to climate change and rely on financial support from citizens.
All in all, these shows us, that people could take some actions to diminish climate change shifts. Even the minute of contribution to reduce global warming will lead to a long way into conserving our planet. Every adjustment in weather patterns will take influence on humans. Therefore, we are the only ones, who can change the way, how we treat to our planet.
